Brachial Plexus Injuries Erb's Paralysis - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes Erb's Paralysis.
The spinal nerves of C5 to T1 are referred to as the roots of the brachial plexus.
Pressure over the point in red in the video ilicit the Duchenne – Erb paralysis.
Injury to Erb’s point is commonly sustained at birth or from a fall onto the shoulder.
Erb’s palsy is caused by lesions of the brachial plexus, normally involving the nerve roots of C5 and partly C6.
Symptoms include paralysis of the biceps, brachialis, and coracobrachialis (through the musculocutaneous nerve); the brachioradialis (through the radial nerve); and the deltoid (through the axillary nerve).
Impaired shoulder abduction, external rotation, and elbow flexion with decrease sensation in the thumb and index fingers with normal scapular control.
• Obstetric brachial plexus injuries:
1-Erb’s paralysis: Erb’s palsy is the most common birth related neuropraxia (about 48%) and it has the best prognosis.
- Its caused by a lesion of C5-C6 nerve roots. (in sone cases C7 is involved as well).
- Paralysis of shoulder ER, abductors and biceps “waiter’s tip”.
- Large babies, shoulder dystocia, forceps, breech, prolonged labor.
- 80%-90% of children with such injuries will attain mormal or near normal function follow the biceps.
- Persistent Horner’s sign (ptosis, myosis, and anhydrosis) is a sign of proximal injury- preganglionic injury, bad prognosis.

2- Klumpke Paralysis: injury to the lower roots (C8-T1) & orC7.
- May follow forceful abduction of the shoulder, producing weakness in intrinsics of the hands as well as long flexor and extensors of the fingers.
- These lesions are usually preganglionic.
- Look for a associated Horner’s syndrome.
- Sensory deficit is a long the medial aspect of the arm, forearm, and hand.

3- PAN- Plexus paralysis: sensory and motor –(C5-T1)
- Flaccid arm.
- Worst prognosis.

Nerve root exiting from the 7th Cervical Vertebra. Its named C8 and not C7 (like the vertebra its associated) with because their is a nerve root, C1, that exists above the C1 vertebra. Hence, even though there is 7 cervical vertebras there is 8 cervical nerve roots.

C8 is the cervical spinal nerve root found between C7 and T1.

It would be really nice if someone could narrate these videos!??  The background elevator music is unnecessary and distracting.
