How Graham Potter Fixed West Ham's Biggest Problem

Graham Potter took charge of his first Premier League game as West Ham Head Coach on Tuesday evening, masterminding a 3-2 win over Fulham despite missing key players like Jarrod Bowen, Jean-Clair Todibo, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Füllkrug. Regardless of his lack of options, Potter's side looked vastly different to those seen under Julen Lopetegui and were significantly more effective both in attack and defence. But why? Jack Elderton and Charlie Walsh from Analytics United discuss how Graham Potter has already fixed West Ham's biggest problem, the tactical changed he made during the game in response to Fulham manager Marco Silva and the different roles Hammers players have been given under the former Brighton and Chelsea boss.

With thanks to: Harry C, Frocka, Graham, Oliver Mathiasen, Frederik Adamsen, Theo Ath & Paul Craymer

Great review! Looking forward to your future content! Slaven once said, if you want to press, everyone needs to press, otherwise there's no point.

i know we can't dismiss what Moyes achieved but this appointment already feels like we have a coach on a different level to what we have had. ever.

Interesting analysis and thoughts, I was at the game and also watched the game the following day to confirm my initial reaction to Potter’s changes.
Kudus imo had a good game, he appeared to be man marked and on receipt of the ball had another two or three player’s quickly around him, they obviously saw him as a major threat and tactically tried to cancel him out.

For me it’s all about distances. Previously we’d have 4 players high but then rest of the team miles back. So when the press is broken the opponent has all the time and space. Now we are moving up and down the pitch together, as it should be. If you’re gonna press you have to press all the way, otherwise you’re just creating gaps for the opposition to play in.

Nice analysis of the improved pressing, but I'd probably argue that Leno makes the error by passing to Pereira (who only had bad options). Under JL, he'd probably have aimed for Iwobi/Robinson who would have been free/under little pressure

Imagine it's Salah left alone on the wing rather than Wilson lol

Hi Jack, regarding the still frame shown, as you may recall, the first Vardy "goal" was ruled out for offside. I love your team's work, but I still don't understand how we lost 3-1.
