Limpet Catch And Cook

LIMPET CATCH AND COOK

A limpet is a sea mollusk that live all over the world. The “common limpet” lives along the shoreline of Western Europe, however different species of limpets can be found anywhere. When I was growing up along the coast of Florida I would always see these guys and swore they were a type of barnacle or something. When Kevin showed me what they were, I was in awe. I had never seen them move because I was usually out during the day and limpets are nocturnal. I would have never guessed there was an entire snail underneath that shell.

These limpets are referred to as owl limpets, the reason being after you shuck them, their shell has a silhouette of an owl inside. Another pro about going for these is that they live near several other species you’re able to catch and cook. Monkey-face eel, rock crab, sea urchin, turban snail, other fish species, all of these mentioned reside in the tide pools. Catch and cooks on all species mentioned coming soon.

If you’re not sold on Limpets yet, this is where the moneymaker line comes in. This is an EXCELLENT way to get your kiddos to try seafood(or adults that don’t have the most developed pallet). When I tell you the way these are prepared tastes EXACTLY like a chicken nugget I am not exaggerating. They’re delicious and super easy prep.

RECIPE:
Wild Limpets
Tenderize them with a meat mallet (baby taps)
Dip in egg yolk, then a flour and salt mixture (heavy on the salt)
Deep fry in Canola Oil for 20-30 seconds and you’re done!

Thank you for watching! Can’t wait to catch (and cook) you on the next one! 🎣 🥘

I like that he's respectful with the limpets. Most cooking videos they just cook them alive

Once i knew an old lady with poodles who never wasnt smoking and drinking. She was rough. She knew i had tried Escargot, and asked me what it tasted like. I began to tell her and she interrupted me with; "and if you tell me it tastes like chicken ill kick your ass". I busted a gut laughing, and now i think of her every time someone says something tastes like chicken.

It's called opihi in Hawaii. Not only that, but its shell has curvy edges and comes in 2 different variations. The yellow belly, and the grey belly. Some can be found underwater, and some on rocks as you can obviously tell. The guts are a delicacy in Hawaii, and I'd recommend trying it grilled with mayo and Sriracha sauce. You won't regret it.

In the azores islands these are known as lapas, they are a traditional delicacy and are eaten raw. At times they are eaten with vinegar and hot sauce but also in modern times grilled with a spicy garlic butter sauce that’s incredible. Always paired with wine and traditional corn bread.

In Hawaii we call them ‘Ophihi’ (Oh-pee-hee). You’ll need to use a butter knife (or anything with a flat surface) to get them off the rock since they hunker down when you touch them. We got some on the islands deep down in the water that are the size of your hand and they taste delicious when you grill them with beer & vinegar.

In Mexico they're called Gorros because of their triangular shell that looks like a Chinese hat. We cook them raw in lime and put cilantro, onion tomato and green Serrano chiles along with salt. Then put it on a tostada and add some hot sauce and in they go
