Suppose you want to categorise some sounds according to criteria of your own making - e.g. car sounds, clock sounds, children laughing. Here is how:

1] Go to preferences / Media Bay and ensure “Allow editing in results list”.
2] Open up the big screen Media Bay (f5)
3] Go to the Attribute Inspector ensure Defined is selected and teh gear icon is highlighted.
4] You should see a "-+ " icon hover over it it states "Add user attribute - hit the pus sign
5] A dialogue box opens. Add user Atribute
6] Ensure Attribute type is set to text
7] Enter a Disp;lay name - I suggest “My Attributes”.
8] Select some samples that you want to mark with your own attributes e.g. Car Sounds, Church Bell Sounds.
9] In the top of the Results pane in Media Bay is a list of properties - first one is usually name.
10] Realise that this list is modifiable. If a property type is taking up too much space you can grap the side bars and drag them smaller. Also - importantly, by dragging the sliders to the end you can find hidden properties (e.g. bars and beats, tempo etc)
11] Your newly created attribute type “My attributes” should be viewable at hte end of this horizintal list, by dragging the slider at the bottom of the results page
12] Drag this horizontally left unitl it is in the veiwable part of your Results screen
13] You can now enter your own custom categories for each sound type - according to your wishes - Car, Church Bell etc
14] Conveniently, the first time you enter an original category in this attribute, you type in the name of the attribute - “Car”. The second time you wish enter Car, you will find it is already present in a drop down list.
15] As your custom list expands you will be able to select formerly entered categories swiftly.
16] Lastly, it might be worth your while to find a quiet hour, to classify all your own sounds and loops this way. It gets easier after the first couple!

In the full media bay you can audition midi files with any active instrument by selecting it at the bottom right.

The full Media Bay (F5) allows me to multi-select a bunch of samples/loops and set their pitch all together if it's not set (at its right side). This happens with my wavs, some (old) ACID loops and the wav output of other loop libraries (Ueberschall) and it's easy with construction kits since they are at the same pitch and you know it. At the start of a project (=before importing loops) I visualize and set the project pitch and insert the transpose track. When all loops are pitch-tagged properly, the small media bay in the Right Zone that you explore in this video will also transpose to project pitch correctly, not only bpm and time-sync. This is highly regarded, since it happens before importing into the project, hence it's fast and you may try many loops until you find one that fits. We can do anything with a project (for instance in the pool) but it would be too late. The next step forward for Cubase 12 would be setting a project scale and having scale adaptation in the media bay, not only transposition (some does it..).

I have a third screen just for media bay always open. It is the best content management system out of any daw or third party apps. I only wish it would read normal plug in presets as bitwig does. Maybe in the future.

Hi! This was really helpful. Dom, I was trying to figure out how to open the loops and rex files I have in my external drive in Media Bay. You mentioned setting it as a favorite and wallah, I can now open the folder in the project window, media bay to my left. HOORAH! Gracias!

Yes, media bay is the really useful function. But I didn't know about tip number 3. Thanks a lot!

Thank you, Dom, for sharing this video. It's always been a curiosity of mine how music composers and producers sift through their extensive sample libraries to find the perfect sound. The answer, as revealed in point #5, is dedicating time to meticulously tag sounds and samples.

Thanks Dom. I started using Media bay a little over a year ago and love it. You reminded me of some things I forgot I can do.

I use the media bay all the time, , it's so nice to be able to scroll through hundreds of sampels in a very short time and listen to them back to back,
The reason number 5 was very smart I have not thought of that before... Thanks for this!!

Crazy. I always use media-bay. Never got to reflect the actual name, not a big fan of manuals.
So when it got verbal, a big wonder!?
-What is this For a funny thing!?
Terminology. So important. The way you actually describe things. You’re great on doing this. It’s interesting and educational. Never fails to bring my attention!
Spot on! Some new tips as well.
Much obliged.
Bows on me 🙏

The option of playing in context with the song using media bay is awesome I didn't know that existed.

'Sup Dom, I remember watching Ian Kirkpatrick's video utilising the Media Bay and a songwriting audio clip on the Cubase channel around two years ago and BOOM! I was blown away by its sheer efficiency. Media Bay is a production suite in itself and a godsend in my organisation of sounds, instruments et al. I simply cannot imagine music production without it. Thanks for sharing

Dom thanks, it's good but I do so wish Steinberg would reintroduce drag n drop midi parts so we can organize the most important thing of all, the music parts!

Just imagine being able to drag to and from the library your most commonly used midi parts!?

Cool. I started using the Media Bay after I bought the Zoom recorder. It is very convenient to organize my records.
