Varroa mite resistance to miticide Amitraz is something to cause concerns. Apis mellifera still in danger because of Varroa mite. Dr. Frank Rinkevich is a honey bee researcher at USDA in Baton Rouge studying the phenomenon.

In Serbia we select bees for varroa resictance since 1982. We have amitraze resistant varroa for more than 15 years. Few times we try to use amitraz again, but ovarall efficancy was always between 50-70%.

I found the video very interesting and thought provoking. In noting the difference in the treatment effect between bees sampled in Nov vs May, my thought was that perhaps there was a difference between the physiology of the winter bee and the summer bee that influenced the results.

Would be interesting to have a follow up about Apivar quality control issues. Bob Binnie has referenced this several times. In 2 of our yards the strips just flat out did not kill the mites. Last year a different batch yielded good results. I doubt in one year the mites in different locations suddenly developed resistance.

To be honest I absolutely question the quality control at in France at Veto Pharma. Interestly I can not recall a commercial beekeeper in Canada that has mentioned these failures.

One question I would like to hear, in the high mite load test yards were the Apivar strips checked themselves? As always, thank You H.

So, if a beekeeper is smart and rotates the use of different chemicals(Formic, oxalic, and amitraz) they should all stay relevant for a good while yet.

Amitraz is used on plant crops and animals (cattle, goats, pigs, etc) so bees may be exposed by this use, as well as what beekeepers apply directly to the hive. Im sure this could contribute to their resistance?

I live just North of the Bee Lab and have never reached treatment thresh hold for varroa in the the past 3 years.

Formic acid always worked just fine if we use it properly and will surely keep working for a long time. It also affects varroa in its reproductive state in the capped brood.
