I just read the Falconer in September and adored it. If you like the sound of young adult steampunk fantasy with a good helping of slow burn romance you'll definetly like it.

Ruth Rendell is amazing. Not all her novels are great, but most of them are really good. If you can find any of her books published under the pen name Barbara Vine, those are even better! Psychological thrillers, crime novels... Ruth Rendell is the queen of the genre. I haven't read the one you've got, but I've liked about 90% of the books I've read so far - by her.

I tried to read The clan of the cave bear but dnf'd it because it wasn't my thing. I felt so bored whilst reading it haha oops! I read 1 Ruth Rendell book before and really liked it! So I have been started to collect her books. I pass along a lot of books too! For now I only keep books that I gave 4 or 5 stars unless I gave it a 3 stars and it has a personal message in it for me. I also borrow from the library and mostly that are books that I'm not sure of or that I haven't seen at a secondhand shop yet. And if I end up really liking a book that I borrowed, I write it down on my wishlist.

Hey Jean, just thought I should give you a heads-up about Clan of the Cave Bear - there's a lot of gender, sex and consent stuff that is really Yikes. I read it not being prepared for that and was quite disturbed, so I thought you should know.

Much time is spent on how the Neanderthal women are expected to "service" the men's "needs" on demand, and this expectation is placed on the girls as soon as they get their first period. The main character is abused for a long time by an older boy and ends up having a baby in a very traumatic birth at the age of about 14 (her adoptive sister also gives birth at age 13).

Have you got any tips on finding / choosing 2nd hand books? I always feel overwhelmed in charity shops!

Wow! Going old school with LeGuin AND Auel. Loved Left Hand of Darkness and Dispossessed back in the day. Tried them again recently and found them a bit dated, so really interested to hear what you think. Also enjoyed the Auel long ago. The series dropped off quickly for me and I couldn’t stick with it.
Dragons - always a good idea! Have you seen Jim Kay’s excellent dragons in the illustrated Potter books?

I love Song in the Silence. It is one of the books I keep on my shelves and circle back to re-read every several years. It is the first in a trilogy, but also works well as a stand alone.

My library card is red hot at the moment! A series in historical mysteries set in Edinburgh is Fey and McGray by Oscar de Muriel, the interaction between the two of them will have you in stitches. I have read the whole series and would recommend. Another recommendation is the Hardcastle and Chaytor mysteries written by A L MacKenzie, it is set in 1790's kent with a rector who somewhat likes his port, I'm just finishing the series.

I hope you’ll love Jean Auel just as much as I do. I’ve read this series over and over. The first three are the best

You should check out History of the Rain by Niall Williams. It's about a college aged girl who is making her way through the 1000s of books in her father's library after he passed away, trying to find him through what he read. It's beautifully written and was nominated for a man booker. I think you'd really enjoy it!

heia, totally agree with you. Second hand book shopping is great. I love those little surprises you'll get as well. Like something scribbled on the margin or a name in the front.
Btw, just ordered a thirteenth tale from a second hand book site.
Love,
Charlie

I'm reading the Left Hand of Darkness now and I'm really enjoying it!! But I would hesitate to describe it as feminist, just because I feel it was groundbreaking for its time and still really interesting today but the radical aspects of it maybe aren't as radical now? Definitely still worth the read despite that and the fact it's a little slow to start, so I hope you end up enjoying it!!
