I was in the checkout line at a grocery store, once, and a woman's kid was fiddling with products for sale on the endcap. The mother said, "I'm going to count to 2. ..." And my head shot up. 2? Just 2? Isn't the universal law that you count to three? She says, "One ..., " and that kid is immediately back at her side. I was extremely impressed ... and a little uneasy to think about what must happen, if she ever gets to 2.

There was a story recently, in the Daily Mail, about some mother in the UK who had her kid taken away because she smacked him on the bottom with a wooden spoon. Didn't beat him within an inch or his life or anything like that, mind you.

She did it because he, while she is unemployed, somehow got a hold of her credit card and ran up about 600 in video games.

We didn't get hit a lot, but when it happened it was memorable.

My Dad and I got into a heated argument once, and I cursed at him. I walked away and he came after me very quickly. My Dad was very strong, and he backhanded me on the face so hard it knocked me to the ground. I didn't want any more of that, so I stayed down.

He later apologized, but I had it coming.

My dad used to use a belt on me back in the 50s. So when my kids were litlle, I learned a trick. When I had enough, I would start to unbuckle my belt. They would always start running. Problem solved. I never used it.

My dad passed when I was 50. In my entire life he never put his hands on me. He didn't have to because I almost never gave him reason to. On the other hand, my mother was a school teacher. Until I was 12, some offenses could mean the little cedar paddle. And she could make it sting like a wasp on the ole Gluteus Maximus.

I cursed at my mom once. My Dad threatened to beat the crap out of me. I believed him and he never had to beat the crap out of me.

Used to get my ass wooped regularly. Taught me that there are consequences for my actions. I would've laughed at my parents if they tried to do something like a modern "time out". Soft is the best descriptor for today's youth.

I remember when I was a kid and learned the n-word. My old man came in the room, yanked me to my feet by my hair and threw me against the wall 10 feet away before threatening me if i ever said that word again I wouldn't have to worry about getting my ass beat because he'd rip it off. My mom came in later and explained the meaning of the word. To this day when I hear someone say it my scalp tingles.

People in the West say spanking leads to lower IQ and antisocial behavior. Our parents and ancestors are living proof that is pseudo-science.

Its cause everything is considered abuse now at days. And kids pretty much rule the parents because the parents can’t really do anything to them. Like my father used to say: There’s a difference between Abuse and Discipline. We got spanked and grounded, sometimes worse. But it was always a case of the punishment fits the crime. Kids are self entitled and spoiled now. I play Call of Duty from time to time, and theres always some little kid, like 8-10 years old, cussing in the lobby and telling people to F off etc. like where is your parents? Kid should be grounded from his game system and got his butt beat as well. Its disgusting how most kids act these days….
