I'm wondering if the cities of refuge in the Old Testament weren't allegorical for purgatory. They were places where one was still in the promised land (allegorical for heaven) but where he could work off temporal damages (inadvertent homicide) for an unspecified amount of time (until then-current high priest dies) without familial blood revenge.

False. Jesus told the thief on the cross that same day he would be with Him in Paradise. If purgatory were true, and it’s not, the thief would have certainly qualified for it, according to the RCC doctrines on sin.
