There's a path in the courtyard of the jail lined with flagstones. A fellow prisoner whispers to him that under one of them there's a trap door leading to an escape tunnel, but which flagstone will be a surprise. The prisoner sneaks out that night with a crowbar and starts one end of the path intending to lift each stone in turn. But then it occurs to him that the stone concealing the escape door won't be the last one in the path because by the time he gets to it he'll know that must be the one, but it can't be because it won't be a surprise. Ditto for the one before that, and the one before that, and so on. Heck, he gives up and returns to his cell.
