We are going to show you how to use the functions of a divers' watch, using Seamaster Planet Ocean Six Hundred Meter Co-Axial Master Chronometer.
Let's start by identifying what makes a divers' watch. We will be highlighting a few essential features in this videos and show you how to use the functions.
Other than being water, shock and scratch resistant, a divers' watch has to be antimagnetic for it to continue functioning well when exposed to gigantic or consistent magnetic forces in close range while diving.
When underwater, it can go from daylight to dark in an instant. For ease of reading in low-light conditions, the watch's hands and applied indexes are coated with SuperLumiNova which emits a blue light. While the dot on the bezel and minute hands emit a
contrasting green light, allowing comfortable reading of the elapsed time at a glance when using the rotating bezel under water.
The Unidirectional Rotating Bezel of a divers' watch is another useful feature, making it easy for a diver to measure elapsed time of up to 60mins. The dot and scale are used for indicating elapsed time during a dive.
Adjust the luminescent dot and position it to the minute hand when starting the dive. The diver can easily see how much time has elapsed by reading off the minutes on the rotating bezel. The bezel rotates in only one direction, ensuring that the elapsed diving time cannot be accidentally decreased. To reset the bezel, rotate it all the way around.
Most importantly, the Helium Escape Valve is a feature unique to a divers' watch. It allows trapped gases to be released during decompression and prevent the crystal face and caseback from popping off.
The Helium escape valve on the Planet Ocean is operated manually. During the decompression phase, unscrew the crown to activate the mechanism. As the interior pressure becomes greater than the exterior pressure, the internal valve mechanism starts working to allow gas molecules to escape in a controlled fashion and stops once the pressure is equalised. This operation is automatically repeated several times during decompression. Once atmospheric pressure is reached, screw down the crown of the
valve.
Now, we're ready to dive.
