Problem is that companies don't want to hire a specialist for each skill set because it is too expensive. They want someone who doesn't exist who is a master of 10 different skill sets.

I feel like schools and degrees are becoming less important and more about the person. Is that person willing to learn new skills? Is that person driven and willing to put in the extra work?

The danger is that employers want employees to have more skills (even if those skills are not relevant/used) than before to differentiate them from the rest of the applicants. The trend is going to be pay less and less for the employees doing the same job, yet require more skills and education that have almost no relevance to the position at all.

I got promoted 3 times in the last year. Most co-workers think it’s because I’m liked by management. Which is one reason, but they don’t know that I spend 3 hours daily studying for certifications and I’m home doing exams while they’re on vacations..

I feel like 10 skillsets in 18months is overstating it a bit. You’re not going to be very skilled in any of those areas if you’re spreading yourself that thin.

Wow, I am SO glad I dropped out of that corporate rat race you're describing. The best way to add skills is to do so from an already employed position, rather than via courses/school. I work in IT and learning new skills is just part of the job, but 10 every 18 months, every 18 months, is a treadmill no human being should be forced onto. We need constants in order to remain grounded, and that includes business. Read Future Shock by Assimov and you'll see what's happening and why it's a problem.

But Pat the problem is the college mentality: study 5 years and monetize that knowledge for the rest of your life. But welcome to 21 century, that doesn't work anymore. The curve of evolution of things is much higher than the ability of a human to adapt. So the only way is studying every day and never stop learning...

Im 21 years old making minimum wage and I work with a couple of 40, 50, 60+ year olds making the same as me. Its truly sad seeing them work and earn the same amount despite starting their life way earlier

I am in IT field myself and been at 15 years now. And I can tell that while Bret-David is correct what is needed, it can't work in real life like that. In any fast moving field its impossible to people learn continously new skills not only well enough but ALSO get job experience for them so you get hired for it. If those skills are actually demanding and are needed for demanding work. If they are not, then everyone can learn them easily and they are not going to be requirements for jobs as everyone has them easily.

Way this can only work is to fake it until you make it. Sure learn skills but dont expect its enough without job experience. Exaggrate CV, convince by speaking to employers and learn it by making what is really required by doing actually the job. When you got enoug experience of a job, divived experience small segments and start to list them as 'skills'. Each time you get something new done even for day, list it as CV as a skill. That way you can fill those requirements employers throw at you.

Whatever people may say, job experirence tops everything else and you only need to make it look good enough. Getting job is about selling and things are how they look.

Well this is depressing so basically if you don't want to be in the public eye or if your not what is commonly considered attractive (because that's mostly what tic-toc and instagram is) then your just not going to get anywhere. Not to mention the overall affect it could have if you do and just end up on the wrong side of things for whatever reason right or wrong, cause we've all seen how some already celebrities have had it outright end or severely hurt their carriers.

The IT field has been like that for many years. Since at least 2000 and it is very true adapt and learn or get run over.
