Natural disasters are just so wild to me in concept, knowing that sometimes the laws of physics on the planet will just happen to reach a point where they can cause mass destruction and there's nothing we can do to stop it

I live in tornado alley, and we can “smell” ‘em coming I swear. Then, clouds turn almost a green color, and the temp will drop suddenly. Winds will get crazy, and then the hail. Honestly, sometimes the hail is scarier than the tornado.

Here in OK we just had a tornado outbreak on 04/27/24-4/28/24 (happened late at night and early morning). We were under a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) tornado watch. One EF-4, two EF-3s and many more EF-2, EF-1, and EF-0. 27 or 26 total in one night. Four people died, including a 4 month old baby. Sulfur, OK downtown got hit pretty hard. Caused a bar to collapse and trapped people. Scary stuff. We have a storm shelter, thankfully. And somehow got lucky that night where we didn’t get a single warning for our house. Stay weather aware if you live where strong, dangerous tornados occur. It could save your life!

For the first time in my life. I saw a tornado which is rare in mumbai, india. I thought it will rain winds were very fast. So i was taking off the clothes off the rack in my balcony. The sand went to my eyes it was very windy. the leaves were all my place i live on4th floor. As i was experiencing it fir first time. I had no idea it was a tornado. I thought it was just harsh wind. I was stunned after realizing it all the windows curtains were full with dirt. Balcony full of leaves and soil. I will never forget that day.

We don't really get tornadoes up in the north of Canada sask, but on a Sunday in June 2024, well traveling I was surrounded by three supercells one of them produce a tornado that lasted 18 minutes, I didn't know at the time I was in the movie theaters

Wonder if forrests would help disrupt surface winds.

I remember that shortly after moving to FL, my mom and I were at the store. we saw people rushing into the store because there was a tornado that was the first and the only time I ever recalled seeing a tornado in real life, and in person my my idea of fun nor are hurricanes ESPECIALLY 🌀 those are scary at least before we got impact windows now if a hurricane comes through my area I'll sit at the window and watch it go bye

If this is correct then technically tornadoes form from the ground up. I find this rather amazing

I don't believe it.
I can't believe a "horizontal" vortex is the key ingredient.
I think the key is the updraft.
Maybe it does sound funny, but is it reasonable to consider the flow in a bathtub drain like an inverted tornado? The flow there can spin - without an initial horizontally rotating element?
I know these systems have been modeled using capable hardware and even custom software - I think Leigh Orf (Univ of Wisconsin) has probably done as much work in this area as anyone.
Having said all that, I think the models Leigh has produced do show there is a horizontal component on the ground, but is that component as much an effect of the existing tornado, or is it really a contributing factor to its creation?
(I'll take another look at some of what Leigh has come up with. Anyone else interested in this subject who doesn't know about Leigh should definitely check him out too.)
