i've always wanted to make a nice icy material in UE, but never could. Testing this with UE5.2 substrate new material system, thought it looks pretty nice....

using 3 layers of materials , bottom layer is the ice , then a coat layer, then a snow layer

substrate make blending material pretty much effortlessly which is very nice compares to the nightmare of old UE's texture blending system which i absolutely despite

since Ue5.2 is still in preview beta and there's no documentation on substrate yet so i'm still figuring this out by myself, sometimes it feels really weird and cryptic at times but i dont know, i've never got this far before, regarding an icy material in UE hahahha, i think Epic games hid sometthing in their Opal's material graph though because their Opal mat looks really really good

for now it's still using UVs but i'll try to make everything triplanar in the furture, also some procedural world aligned snow, and maybe make a whole complete, scene with this, who knows.......

i feel like the roughness/ the normal still doesnt quite have enough variance, it looks a bit too perfect of a surface. No scratches or any bumps

Hey, this looks great! Would you mind sharing the material graph? As you have already stated, there is not much information about Substrate avalailable at the moment.

I love how that looks did you make the material from scratch or did you use a preset ?
