BK-IN (Break-In) is a multifaceted function in this transceiver, and other Yaesu transceivers. It enables CW transmit. Disabled, BK-IN allows you to practice sending CW (Morse Code) without actually transmitting a signal. BK-IN must also be enabled in order to engage the transmitter to send message memory transmissions, for both CW and Voice. Otherwise, engaging a message memory only allows you to sample what the message sounds like without actually transmitting it.

The term “Break-in” refers to the ability of a transceiver to enable its receiver between pauses of the “dits and dahs” of your CW transmission, allowing you to hear if someone “breaks in” to send you a message while you are still sending your message. This is called QSK operation.

Other parameters must be set in the Yaesu transceiver function menu in order to adjust the amount of time delay between dits and dahs before the receiver is enabled. Semi-Break-in allows the receiver to engage after a pause in your transmitted message, while Full-Break-in engages the receiver between each dit and dah of your transmitted message.

Note that this methodology also applies to the FTdx10. There is also a collection dedicated to the FTdx10.

For the newer hams, BK-IN = Break-In. Its function has been around for a long time to give the operator more control.

So, you can record and transmit messages on the 710 then using the break-in button for like contesting and such?
