How to use picture-in-picture on your mobile device

Picture-in-picture (PiP) shrinks a video into a small player so you can keep watching while using other apps on your mobile device. You can move the small player around your device’s home screen and position it over other apps.

You can use picture-in-picture (PiP) to watch content across YouTube, with a YouTube Premium membership. If you don’t have YouTube Premium and are in the United States, you can still use PiP, but you can’t watch certain content, like music videos.

the PIP function has been disabled by Youtube. I guess it is now reserved for paid members only.

You can watch adds in the corner of your screen now without the option to close them.

Youtube sometimes just allow me to minimize the screen sometimes not. Also is the minimize thing a premium option? If it is then youtube is 100% greedy

So turns out if you’re outside the US you’re gonna need premium to make it work. If you are in the US then it should work for most videos just not music videos. This is for both Android and IOS.

I just got a new phone. It worked on the old phone for over a year, and for a little over 24 hours on this phone, until i updated the app now theres no option for it and it wont go into picture in picture mode. I never had youtube premium and this worked for me, did youtube just change it to require premium? Thats really dumb after allowing it for over a year.

Ok so apparently I just read that picture in picture mode is a YouTube premium feature outside of the US but in the US it is still a premium feature for music videos

Thank you! Mine got toggled off when I deleted and redownloaded the app. I tried looking in the settings on my own and didn’t find this. Then I followed your instructions and it immediately worked. Thanks for the quick and clear instructions! 👏🏽

Had the same issue and just fixed it:
1. Went to the YouTube settings
2. Scrolled down and went on "PLAYBACK" (in the Video and audio preferences section)
3. Ticked "Picture-in-Picture"
4. Made sure that it was also activated on my device's settings
5. Closed and reopened the YouTube app

It's now working again! Jesus bless you all!

Finally it works! I have premium and it always automatically did this but i deleted and uninstalled the app and the settings got reset so it didn’t do it. Thanks!

Note:this thing only works sometimes. I was using it on a video. Swapped to something else and it stopped working
