We compare the picture quality of Microsoft's new Xbox One X console vs a dedicated 4K Blu-ray player (the Panasonic UB900) in terms of Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, after a firmware update has fixed the console's elevated black level for HDR video output.

Ryan Masciola's HDR10 test disc can be found here:

For those still wondering - the issue has been fixed a few months ago. I just googled to see if they've released a firmware fix since this video has come out and apparently MS stopped doing the ycbcr to rgb conversion in a firmware released a few months ago.

The only time we will ever hear anyone thank God for two copy's of Power Rangers.

Thank you for exposing the decoding issue of the XBox One X. Have you approached Microsoft regarding this issue, so they might fix it in an upcoming FW update?

Love it when he reminds us how he "proudly" owns two copies of power rangers lol. Nice vid as always 👍

Can you please make a follow up video on this ? Microsoft fixed the issue almost an year ago, but people are still getting mislead by watching your video

Vincent Teoh - NOT Professional Bow tie calibrator :D Good video again and the Xbox One X seems a decent 4K player for casual movie watchers

If you're a gamer you have hit the jackpot with a Blu-ray player that is almost as good as the best, AND plays games for a hundred dollars less than the machine that only plays movies.

Quote from xbox:
"We have resolved issues with RGB colors when displaying in 4K HDR mode when playing a UHD disk"

Please see source below for a statment of fix to the 4k disc playback RGB issues. This is update 1804. Use cntrl-f on your browser and type "Display" for the section with the statement.

Is there anyway you can reach out to Microsoft on the consumers behalf about this issue?

Is this something they can fix via firmware?

HDTVTest ... Thanks for the excellent comparison and breakdown of the differences in capabilities. Do you think the decoding mismatch internally of the Xbox One X can be resolved with another update to the firmware/OS? Or is this a hardware limitation in the way Xbox is engineered?

To me, as an occasional 4K Blu-Ray user. The Xbox One X is good enough. I will have it on my wish list.

Reality is, if you don’t have two versions right in front of you and someone hasn’t pointed out which is the correct display, you will never know as you won’t have any reference material to compare it to. I watched Star Trek Beyond on my X last night, it was a sharp image and colourful with inky blacks on my Oled E6. Dolby Atmos through my amp sounded incredible. Just set it to allow the amp to decide. Oppo high price is not worth it.

What I also find is interesting is Steve over at AVForums when he tested it, said the same thing, however the difference is so small you wouldn’t notice. Guess it’s a matter of opinion.

Apparently this fault has been addressed in the spring update which is currently available to anyone that has signed up to the Xbox insider app.
It would be great if you could do a follow up video to test if this is the case or not.
Thanks, James.

Great video but 1 question. Can the Panasonic play 4k video games? mmm for a console with the last update is a very VERY good quality way to see a film. Thanks for your hard work showing us this.

Great video! I'm not sure mine is working correctly, as I'm new to 4K Blu-rays and wasn't particularly wowed by the picture. I switched between a 4K Blu-ray copy of Fast & Furious 8 and a regular 1080p Blu-ray copy and found that the 1080p copy looked...pretty much the same. In fact I felt like it looked slightly better. Obviously it's being upscaled but I would expect the 4K copy to be the clear winner there. The same thing is happening with UHD Netflix, I'm not really seeing any jump from the regular HD content.

Have a friend who is having the same experience, but I can't find anything online about this particular problem, which has me worried! TV is all set up correctly and the console shows that it's all good for 4K and HDR etc., so it's as if there's a problem with the way the console is playing video, because games are most definitely in 4K and look stunning.

Hoping it's not just my eyes and that it's something they sort at some point because right now I'm not seeing the benefit of the 4K discs!

Thank for this. Now I can prove or at least support my claims to certain people why you should buy a dedicated player if you want to enjoy an accurate presentation of 4K UHD Blu-ray movies.

Nice job Vincent. You should do this all the time so companies like MS are more responsive to updates or perhaps they should hire you for your expertise!

I don't think you mentioned anything about dolby vision - which the bluray app doesn't support. It would be interesting to revisit this in light of the next gen consoles to see if they will support it.
