DIY Leaf Brooch from a Soda Can

Hello, crafty nerds!
If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, you might have the wish to own the brooch that the fellowship of the ring wears: the Leaf of Lórien.

Well, your wish shall be granted! In this video I'll show you how to make your own using upcycled or cheap materials that you might already have at home!

And I tried to make it as movie-accurate as possible (in my opinion almost more accurate than the ones you can buy).

The upcycled material used is a soda can - I am a bit obsessed with cans actually.

Is anyone even reading this? :P If you do, I bow before you.

So, if you always wanted this brooch like me, or you want to make it for a friend, or you're just looking for upcycling inspiration.. Enjoy the video!

taking some sandpaper to the the surface before the paint will make the paint hold better. just rough it up a little bit.

Really good work!

If I could make a suggestion;
Don’t worry about the color for the paint initially, just finish the scratch work to get the leaf pattern on it.

Once you’re there, I really think it’d be worthwhile to make a mold of it. The scratches should be deep enough for silicone to pick up.

From there you can cast it in epoxy, it’d be far stronger, still light, and if you ever break one you can quickly make another!

Fantastic tutorial! Very well explained/shown and the end result is gorgeous. As a long-time crafter, I have ONE ever-so-important piece of advice for those new to hot glue that might take a shot at your project...

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN APPLYING HOT GLUE TO METAL OBJECTS.

Seriously. It WILL get hot enough to burn you (yup, even with low-temp hot glue guns) and it'll hurt like a sunnovabitch. Learned this the hard way when I first used hot glue on tin foil... ;___;

Fabulous idea! I think that if you roughed up the metal w/ a nail file, that first layer of paint would probably stick on better...also I might hide all the wires and such with a strip of black felt to keep it from snatching at skin and clothes as well as make it look 10x fancier for very cheap. =3

I did this bc my wish broche didn't arrive in time and it looked SO much better! No one could believe that I made it myself and I received loads of compliments!

I love this. And literally my favorite line is just: "And give some to friends so you can find them when orcs kidnap them. You never know." XD Great video, and I'm certainly going to try this out!

Looks great! The two only recomendations that I would make is #1, use sandpaper lightly to remove the paint form the can's front, and #2, to use a single piece of wire for the vines/stem. The single wire would take only a little more work, but it'll look cleaner, and and more structural rigidity.

This is so clever! And the video was very well edited and easy to understand. Thank you!

What I like best about this tutorial, is that ist uses stuff most crafty people already have at home (the only thing I had to get was green paint), you don't have to get 300$ supplies or specialist tools. I did a crafty evening with by bbf, and we're the most glamourous hobbits in the town now.

What can I say. That is amazing. I did one for my daughter. I used CA glue and epoxy putty to connect and fill backside. It looks slightly better but I even wouldn't think about starting without your tutorial. Thank you very much! ... and you have so natural, beatiful nails.
