I think the confusion here with "downplaying it" is that he didn't freak out about it and he remained calm while taking action. Also the questions he's receiving are at different times, in different contexts, addressing different people, in different communities, under different pretenses, edited by different outlets. I think Trump remaining calm and putting on a strong face for the country is much better than falling to pieces and saying there's nothing we can do and we're all gonna die. Anything he does he is criticized for. He would cure cancer and the left would say that they want it back because it hurt having it taken out.
