Environmental protesters dyed the waters of Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain black on May 21, to call for an end to ‘government subsidies of fossil fuel.’ The demonstrators, who were affiliated with the group Last Generation, held signs reading ‘We won’t pay for fossil [fuels]’ and shouted ‘Our country is dying,’ per Reuters.

The timing of the protesters’ actions is noteworthy: Italy’s northern Emilia-Romagna region was hit with catastrophic flooding this week that left several people dead and more than 36,000 displaced. According to Last Generation, 1 in 4 homes in Italy is at risk of extreme flooding and other effects of the climate crisis.

Did no one in the crowd watch 'Dont look up'? They're outraged at the wrong thing. We are sooo f'd.

In 2009, G20 countries all agreed to phase out fossil fuels in the "medium term".

11 years later, in 2020, IMF estimated $11 million dollars a minute in fossil fuel subsidies. 💰💰💰

Our governments are corrupt. What can we do? ✊

Wow, why would that lady hit the protestor? No need to assault someone protesting.

These protestors are only making me hate them and taking the focus off their issue. There are FAR better ways to protest and bring attention to the issue.
