Mark Zuckerberg announces Llama 3, Meta's new AI assistant

Meta Platforms (META) has launched its free AI assistant across all of its social media platforms. The virtual chatbot is powered by Meta's own AI model Llama 3 as it seeks to enable users to ask questions and engage in conversations. Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley breaks down the functions of this new feature.

I feel like they're missing the bigger point on this. They released this as an open source model that they're hoping will be the defacto standard for open source LLM development and watch the development and research community grow their platform like they did when they released React as open source. Also their stated goal is creating AGI, this is just a small step towards that goal. Giving instagram users a chatbot is more of a slight diversion of their actual mission.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the launch of the company’s advanced AI assistant, Meta AI, powered by the state-of-the-art language model Llama 3 ¹. Meta AI is a free virtual assistant which can be used "to do everything from research, planning a trip with your group chat, writing a photo caption and more, " according to the company's blog ².
