"Is this a wedding or a pageant?"
Roma: "yes"

Those TLC shows grossly misrepresented our people and culture by feeding into negative racial stereotypes and spreading them on a wide scale. The vast majority of the weddings weren’t even real and were made up of actors, only the first season of the UK show had real Irish travellers (who aren’t even Romani) but they weren’t profitable enough so they started just getting actors. On the off chance they do get real Romani people, they misrepresent them entirely and twist the events to their liking.

I remember the girl who actually went back to her bio families home country and had an ACTUAL Romani wedding, as she connected with her original roots. She was fostered and adopted by am American family and when she got engaged she got closer to her bio family. It was a nice wedding to see all the traditions to.

The American TLC “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” and “Gypsy Sisters” focused pretty much on one family of Romanichals who live in Martinsville, West Virginia. I do vaguely remember there was one episode that showed a couple where I think the bride was Romanichal and the groom was Romani. As I remember, they didn’t didn’t focus super closely on that particular couple There were only bits and pieces of their wedding. But it looked very dignified and very unlike the ridiculous weddings that were showcased on TLC. They also featured some kind of baby shower of an Irish Traveler couple too. Actually the mother wasn’t Irish Traveler. But apparently she was “more Traveler than most Travelers” according to the groom’s mother. And they were pretty low key and not like the Irish Travelers featured in the UK version of ‘My Big, Fat …Wedding’. You had mentioned that the people on the American TLC version of the show weren’t Romani or Romanichal because they looked White. I looked up if there was a list of famous Romanichal people. They only listed British Romanichals. But the people listed all looked pretty White. Charlie Chaplin, Adam Ant (famous new wave singer in the 80s) Robert Plant (the lead singer of Led Zeppelin), Bob Hoskins (a famous English actor but he played the lead in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”, and Cher Lloyd (famous British singer who is now a judge on “Britain’s Got Talent”.

Im interested in what colors/styles romani wedding dresses would be before Queen Victoria (who by wearing white for her wedding started the trend of wearing white that we see today)

Can you make a video on practises of child brides? I know these are hard topics but I think we need to talk about them too. As an Indian, we too had such practises, but now gladly there aren't anymore

In contrast to that TLC “show” 😊 I really liked the movie Latcho Drom by Tony Gatlif. I found it expressed Romani culture very beautifully and with more respect

Just curious, does tlc also lie about the child wedding thing? Also those weddings you showed are so pretty!
