Fiberglass insulation gets its R-value from the amount of air it traps between its fibers. If it's jammed too tightly into a cavity, it can't trap as much air and won't be as effective. Also the paper facing should always face toward the inside of the home. That's because the paper contains a layer of asphalt adhesive which prevents water vapor from passing through it.

As I watch these episodes of Best Family Homestead and Old Byrd Farm, I sense a business venture on the horizon.

Spent a year insulating houses in my wild youth. I found showering cold water and and gently rubbing downward on arms was the best method to keep from itching. I also washed clothing I wore while using fiberglass was was washed in a seperate load. Wearing a mask to keep those out od my, ungs was a good idea.
