This stunning 700-square-foot, self-built float home is fully off-grid with solar power, a pellet stove, a composting toilet, and an evaporation grey water system that ensures nothing is dumped overboard! It has an open concept kitchen, living and dining space, a master bedroom and bathroom on the main floor, two bedrooms on the second floor, and the wraparound deck up top gives 360 degree views. Take a full tour of this sustainable tiny floating house!

You can follow Jay Blackmore and see more photos from his DIY float home build here:

Jay built it in his spare time (between working, spending time with his kids, and sailing) over the course of 4 years as an alternative housing option to the country home he had before, which he felt was too expensive, too far from town, and too much maintenance. Now he doesn't have a lawn to mow or a driveway to shovel, and he is walking distance to all the amenities in town and just a few steps from his sailboat that is docked in the same marina.

It's not an easy lifestyle though, everything that goes in and out of the float home has to be carried there, including propane tanks, pellets for the woodstove, groceries, garbage, etc. even in the middle of winter when docks are icy and the wind is blowing. And it's quite public with boaters and paddlers going by all day. But Jay says it's all about mindset and he's okay with these smaller challenges since it allows him a lifestyle that suits him perfectly.

You can really hear how intelligent this guy is.

The amount of engineering, fire science, biological science, and physical science knowledge that this man contains in his head is astounding. That combined with his financial acumen and practical applications of all the basic principals of each knowledge area is more impressive than the home. Of course...he needed all of that knowledge to build the home on his own.

I appreciate how truly sustainable your home is. Most people try and be green by setting up solar panels and call it a day. But man that water system is truly a work of art.

"I started feeling like the house owned me, instead of me owning the house". Yeah, I can relate to that.

Hey! I drive past (and admire) your boat home Everytime I go into town for groceries!
PS: I live in a converted school bus, so I admire your work from a bit of a more understanding view!

Love, love, love the grey water treatment!!! It's clearly something important to him and not just something he did to satisfy regulations so he has my respect. Also that front door is awesome and I love the attention paid to safety! Great project and great video! :)

I really have to hand it to you, man. You have built a beautiful dream house where less is more.
Your children will benefit from the incredible example that you set for us all. Only thing missing was maybe a scooter for grocery runs, maybe with a sidecar.🙂

I’ve saved this video because I love the way he treats his grey water. He is such an inspiration.

Damn safety’s a priority for this guy which I love to see. The majority of folks with tiny homes that I’ve seen online either don’t really have much of a system or they just don’t discuss it. I’m glad he went over this stuff because it’s overlooked.

I love love love your home - particularly the exterior. I have always liked flower boxes and all the potted plants. Your choice in materials and colors are excellent.

I build a lot of stuff and watch a lot of these kinds of videos with the goal of doing something like it myself, and this is one of the cleanest, most functional, sensible builds I've seen. Very nice.

I've been watching lots of off-grid house videos on youtube, and this one is the coolest so far

Using the sacks of pellets as your ballast was brilliant.

The exterior of the home is so beautiful! The colors, shape, and materials along with the plants are so pretty, especially floating above the water. I also love how it is off-grid! I thinl that is such an important thing to do in a tiny home.

As a retired engineer, I have to say, he did an outstanding job on the practical design of this float home. Well done!

I have admired this home from the outside (sailed in the boat moored beside it :-) ) and am really glad to have found this story on the building of it and the interior. What a wonderful, sustainable home you have built. Kudos to you :-)

I love how well thought out his home is. My favorite part was the filtration system as well as the fact that he isn’t just dumping his waste in the sea.
