The Most Hated Fight in Hajime No Ippo, That I Loved | Ippo VS Wally

Ippo vs Wally (or Woli if you prefer) is one of the more interesting fights in Hajime No Ippo to say the least. I'd almost go so far as to say it's the most hated fight in the series, if not, the most controvertial.

But, well, I loved it.

If you're confused by that, and you feel as though that train of thought shouldn't even be possible, you can quickly understand why I feel this way in a short 6 minutes and 34 seconds.

Did I have to turn this into a video? No. Did I want too? Well, Yes

So thanks for hearing me out if you happen to watch the whole thing, and have a fantastic day.

There are a lot of reasons why the fight is hated, such as it not being realistic, and Ippo's corner sending him to get brain damaged. But you liked the fight, fair enough. However, here is the real reason that the fight was hated so much, which would not be apparent to newcomers to the series. It was a really long fight. Once you get caught up with the chapters that are out, it feels things progress at a snail's pace (the mangaka took many breaks some years). So this fight took like, jeez, idk exactly, about a year? I think it was like 30-40 chapters or so, not including the buildup to the fight. In real time for those that were reading weekly, it felt like forever. And every week that a chapter came out it'd just be Ippo getting railed on. For months at a time. When I started reading all the chapters were already out, so I didn't suffer, but it was still a bit too long of a fight for what was accomplished. I didn't really like the Wally fight personally, but there was at least one other fight around that time that I found far more annoying so for me it's not the worst Ippo fight.

Another awesome video - I've heard lots of great things about HNI, and this video definitely convinced me to move it up to the top of my "to watch" list. Great to see new content from you, as always! Thanks for the advice you gave me a little while back, by the way; I took it under advisement and I think my videos are coming out a lot better these days.

Which, speaking of; I just finished filming my first build video/kit review. I just wanted to say thanks again for being such a great inspiration - it was your Holo Blade Liger vid that convinced me to try and make Gunpla content (although it took me a little while to get around to it lol).

The boxing match wasn’t too unrealistic to me. Wally is supposed to represent an extreme physical outlier like Deontay wilder with his punching power.

Wally is supposed to be a freak of nature who’s fighting style is made to incorporate his near peak human agility, speed and reaction time and stamina.

He also fights in a extremely unorthodox way Emmanuel Augustus or the MMA fighter Krazy horse. Ippo is a professional fighter with thousands of hours training to fight against orthodox fighters. Imagine how frustrating it is fight someone like Wally.

Wally’s entire gameplan is that fighting him is a huge confusing puzzle for professional fighters. You could never train for a fighter like Wally he is unpredictable. It frustrates his opponents and Wally capitalizes on it by punishing them for it.

His monkey like antics and and joking attitude and calm demeanor during his fights also bring in a psychological aspect for the fight as well. “why isn’t he taking this seriously!? I’ll show him!”

Only weird thing for me is woli using flicker jab and the rope grabbing technique. Grabbing the rope to stop his dash is kinda ok but hanging in the air, for who knows how many sec then throwing himself in a different direction, is too much. I still enjoy it tho(recently started reading the manga, no spoiler comments please)

IS GOING TO RETIRE SOMEDAY!? I mean, I know that is a thing in championship boxing, hell it is even a plot point in Punch Out Wii but DAMN! As for the fight, yeah it sounds like what would happen if you took Little Mac and then all of a sudden a Goku type character is his next opponent and then it turns into a shounen battle manga for one fight. I can see why a lot of people would not like this as a whole, but it does have those little good points, such as Ippo learning something about his own fighting style or the possibility that he would lose the match. With that, I can also see why you would love this fight and overall this was a fine video and nice to hear that you like Haijime no Ippo too!

However talented you are, you can never beat a veteran of ippo's calibre.

being agile has its limits, the fact that he moved around so much yet he barely showed visible exhaustion was the most irritating part.

Most people don't have problems with the unrealistic nature of the fight, they have a problem with how its unrealistic even for the manga.

I like the Wally fight too, although I do recognize that there are a lot of problems with it.
What I really don't understand is the hate the Gedo fight gets, cause that's a fight I absolutely love

this fight for me it's strange, I liked some aspects of it but others were a bit annoying, after this fight also there's a match (not including Ippo) that I really didn't like and I wanted to skip, however after chapter 920 or so the manga really started to become really good to me, and if you ask me the chapters that goes from chapter 980 to 1210 are the best part of the story, from 1210 to current the story is really great as well but we aren't anymore in that climax yet.

I do see what you like about it, but I don't think the fight's really that hated.
