Meridian7 aka Lori Napoleon performed Intercept Tone/Vacant Level, a new work for analog modules in the Harvestworks 2013 New York Electronic Art Festival. She also was an Artist in Residence at Harvestworks in 2013 where she completed three new instruments, gained more expertise in audio recording, multiple channel sound spatialization and composition through working with Paul Geluso, our chief recording engineer.

This performance is an analog audio excursion that brings obsolete telephone equipment back to a life of patching signals by transforming vintage switchboards into modular synthesizers and sequencers. The piece is inspired by the cryptic sounds of archival DIY field recordings of analog switching systems captured by a subculture of audio explorers with reel-to-reels called phone phreaks. This piece explores sonic textures using comb filtering, a technique that creates evolving timbres through a process of time-delayed feedback that forms "notches" of positive and negative interference, and other endless modifications of the signal path.
