Co-occurring disorders are very important to look out for if you're an addict. Like the doc alluded, a lot of addiction may be partly or all self medication. It's kind of a double whammy actually, because many medicines that are used to treat anxiety and panic disorders have a high potential for abuse. My counselor preaches that it's coping skills, or coping pills. Meaning that if you don't use the tools of recovery you will start using tools of abuse. Privately, with me he says coping pills and coping skills. That's only because he's been my counselor that I've been seeing at least weekly for years, and he knows I'm working closely with my doctor who prescribes my meds. Side note, please don't lie to doctors about your addiction. You have to be honest and forthcoming if you legitimately want a better life. I was having problems taking one of my medicine as prescribed, and he reminded me that hey, I am an addict right? Well I know that addiction isn't picky. It will creep in to ANY aspect of your life that it can. Like a tumor or a parasite. If you don't do anything not to abuse, then you will inevitable abuse. I'm basically getting the help I should've been getting when I was a child. Therapy is very important, and can take many forms. If you're wary of professional help for some reason, you could even go to a recovery group. There's a recovery group for anything and everything nowadays. You might just be surprised at how many people are going and or have gone through exactly what you are, and are willing to help. It is very important to find the right recovery group for you, especially if you're looking for a sponsor. God speed everyone. Edit: TLDR what he said.
