Here's a ride on the newest train on Vancouver's SkyTrain, the Mark III manufactured in Millhaven, Ontario by Bombardier which entered service in August 2016. During my previous visit to Vancouver in May 2016, I was also able to see a Mark III at the yard east of Edmonds Station, but it was not numbered and the articulation corridors were not installed and blocked off by wood paneling. These Mark III trains are the first to have all four cars connected without any internal doors, while the Mark II has two cars connected (cannot walk between cars 2 and 3), and the Mark I ICTS has a shorter car body and all cars are detached (due to their shorter length, they run in 6 cars that together is slightly longer than a 4-car Mark III). These identical Mark III trains also operate on the Kelana Jaya Line on the rapidKL system in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and they entered service in December 2016 and I also filmed it back in May 2017. The rapidKL units also have a different motor creating a different sound, and I also made a sound comparison video of the two in the links below.

While the Mark III is definitely the nicest looking train on the system, there are also only 28 cars (7 sets) operating on the line. I find it illogical not to order more at once since having all four cars connected adds capacity and easily solve overcrowding issues and the Mark I cars definitely are much too small especially during rush hour. However, there will be 56 cars (14 sets) coming in 2019 but I think that these should be delivered much sooner than that and the order expanded.

This was filmed on the newest set, 425/428, from Lougheed Town Centre to Metrotown on the second branch of the Expo Line. Before October 2016, the section from Lougheed to Columbia was part of the Millennium Line, and Millennium Line trains ran from VCC-Clark to Waterfront. Now it turns north from Lougheed into the new Evergreen Extension to Lafarge Lake-Douglas which opened in December 2016.

Apologies for not being able to get a clear interior view, as it was filmed during the evening rush hour. I might try again when I return to Vancouver in a few days' time from Whistler, before going back to Toronto. But catching a Mark III is hard since there's only 7 sets!

Filmed 8 December 2017

Here's a ride on the newest train on Vancouver's SkyTrain, the Mark III manufactured in Millhaven, Ontario by Bombardier which entered service in August 2016. Starting on August 2016 until further notice, Mark III trains will be in revenue service on the Expo Line. The air-conditioning on some of the Mark I and Mark II trains were broken down. This forces these trains to be pulled out of service. This is where the 4-car Mark III trains come in to keep up with frequencies.

I've wondered whether SkyTrain could do five-car consists in the space of a platform made for 6-car Mk I trains.
