Spoilers for the first "Fullmetal Alchemist" animated series:

Each homunculus was an attempt to resurrect a loved one. the main characters of the story, Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempted to resurrect their deceased mother using a pile of materials that amounted to what the human body would be composed of if you separated it on a molecular level. They hoped to rebuild her body from these materials and place her soul in it. The procedure goes badly, costing Edward his left leg and right arm and costing Alphonse his entire body with his soul being bound to a suit of armor. What was created from this botched attempt was a homunculus, a soulless being infused with memories of the mother they were trying to resurrect and an intense hatred of the alchemists who created her.

Several homunculi are introduced throughout the story. While we don't learn each of their backstories, we doo learn that this seems to be a repeating pattern. An alchemist attempts to resurrect a lost loved one, the procedure leaves the alchemist maimed and the resultant homunculus is a monster carrying memories of their loved ones and intense hatred of the alchemist.

My interpretation is that the homunculus is only what the alchemist puts into it. The memories are only memories the alchemist has of their loved one and the personality is only what the alchemist had come to expect of them.

And the hatred and rage are the result of the alchemist blaming themselves for their loved one's death. The alchemists all seemed to blame themselves for failing to prevent the death of their loved one.
