It's not that women are opressed here. Jagna's mother keeps her two sons unmarried and doesn't give them any land of their own, so that they'll be dependant on her for her entire life and work for her for free, that's why she's the second most rich person in the village

The only thing that hurts me about this film is that if you are not Polish you will not understand what the characters are saying and you will not fully experience the message of this film, especially since the language used is Old Polish and the subtitles will never fully convey it. I feel sorry for you, because it is a story based on an old book "Chłopi" - Władysław Reymont

I think is 10 out of 10 you can give batman 4 out of 5. Its a novel from 1897-1909 wining a noble price in literature.

In the book, Jagna is pretty easy to hate, actually. The film changed that, portraying her purely as a victim. In the book, Boryna actually loves Jagna, while she marries him only because her mother made her do so, Jagna also cheats on him with diffrent people, including his own son. When it comes to "oh she's so opressed by the patriarchy" bullshit, she wasn't opposing her marriage with Boryna, she was like "ok mom, whatever"

You're right: modern young women can proudly say: "we are like Jagna, we identify with her" Jagna is ahead of her times: "don't worry about destroying other people's lives, do what you want"

Nice to look at, but the script is awful.
