As a late teen, early adult, I've basically had to teach myself reading again. At school they only got me to focus on individual words. I could never retain what I'd read because I just wasn't connecting the meanings of words to the visual of the word. Over quarantine and some help at University I've now gotten to love reading, and I would say I'm fairly proficient.

Activating Prior Knowledge (APK) is incredibly important when introducing a story or new text, this is based on the notion of schema by Piaget. There may be a review of vocabulary prior to discussing the reading strategies for a particular lesson (context clues, inference, main idea and supporting details, cloze procedures etc). The importance of fluency and the acquisition of language by way of phonemes and graphemes (glued sounds) is necessary. I've also seen the pairing of graphemes and phonemes referenced as 'chunking'

Would you say it’s a good idea to elicit a description of pictures (“What animals do you see?”) and also a few keywords before reading a whole page? Or is it best to just read continuously and with less interruptions?

Reading comprehension has become a dying skill. I'd even call it dead.
