The flag was adopted on 10th October 1970 and has a 1:2 ratio.

The light blue was introduced when the country regained independence from the UK. Before that a rather more complicated shield and darker blue donned the flag.
The shield was issued to Fiji in 1908 and at present houses a British symbol of a yellow lion on red however holding a cacao pod and includes the local symbols in and amongst the St. George's cross, sugar cane, coconuts, bananas, and Fiji dove. Previously to this shield was a little more complicated, somehow. However before that the Kingdom of Fiji included palm trees and a motto.

There were plans to change the flag in 2015 but this was shelved in 2016 partly due to Fiji winning their first ever gold Olympic medal.
