Karnataka Election 2023: Why is Karnataka so important for BJP?
Показать описание
Karnataka Opinion Poll 2023: After the conclusion of the Assembly elections in three Northeast states, all eyes are on Karnataka, which will go to polls in May. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Karnataka to dedicate and lay the foundation stones for projects including the inauguration of the ambitious Bengaluru – Mysuru expressway. The Karnataka polls in May are critical because they will kick off the Assembly election season in right earnest, with six big states to hold polls ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Karnataka accounts for 5.04% of India’s population and elects 28 of the 543 Lok Sabha officials. This makes it seventh in the list of states with the highest number of Lok Sabha MPs- after Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. With this being said, Modi finds Karnataka especially important because the politically, the state has seen the steady presence of the BJP party. In the 1994 Assembly elections, the BJP won 40 seats out of 224 and in 2004, 79 seats. In 2007, B S Yediyurappa became the first BJP CM in the state.
With fresh elections held in 2008, the BJP improved its tally to 110 seats of the 224 seats. And in 2018, when the Modi era had begun, the BJP emerged in Karnataka as the single largest party with 104 seats and a vote share of 36.22%. Even though these numbers seem high, the Karnataka Assembly elections are being taken very seriously. This is because competitors, the Congress especially, in 2018, won most of its seats against the BJP (58 of 79 to be exact) indicating that it is still a main competitor in the state.
Therefore, in a sure bid to gain more seats, PM Modi is especially focusing on infrastructure development and education worth approximately 16,000 crore rupees including the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway and the IIT at Dharwad which cost over 850 crore to build.
