Serifos: the Iron Island is a documentary about a small Greek Island in the Aegean Sea. It tells the story of the mining enterprise that was active in Serifos from the late 19th century until the mid Sixties and of the people that worked there. Through the memories of the last living miners we look back at the island's conflicted past, reliving the daily routine and the way operation were handled in the mines, a historical journey that culminates in the retelling of the bloody strike of 1916 (which was one of the first workers' strikes to ever take place in Greece) and, most importantly, of its aftermath. Even long after they were closed down, the controversial legacy left by the mines lived on, always at the heart of every contention between the inhabitants, and of every clash between Serifos and the outside world. The island – the wounds still fresh from that difficult time – seems to have lost its bearings today: a geographical place unable to come to terms with its past, facing the future with an uncertain look. The documentary's aim is to uncover the unknown, hidden side of Serifos, to reveal the secrets that lie behind the gorgeous sunsets and the glistening blue sea of the island's shore.
