I mean we know there was infight between the member so it might went further than that. Shanks and Hawk are interchagable destiny figures. Garling trained Mihawk to alternate his missing son, While Shanks was trained by Mihawk's Father (Rayleigh, mother is Shakky). Their friendly rivalry has more meaning, thus why even Newgate aknowlegde it so much.( If my old opponents from Godvalley had kids that fight regulary I would bet money for sure)
