Opal & Her Symbolism Explained! | Steven Universe

Opal is the subject of today's Steven Universe explained. We're going to breakdown this fusion between Amethyst and Pearl and her real world namesake.

In my opinion, I think that Opal is so forgetful because she is mostly only focused on keeping her fusion stable. If the slightest things slips out of her hand (literally and metaphorically) you loses that balance and unfuses

Opal is one of my all time favorite gem fusions in Steven Universe.

I just realized that the 3 main crystal gems (Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl) each represent a different position of time. Pearl represents the past with her always reminiscing about her time with Rose, Amethyst represents the present with her living in the present, and Garnet represents the future with her future vision.

I love how Steven Universe treats Gem’s extra body parts as completely functional and with purpose. They don’t look out of place when Opal uses her four arms to shoot an arrow.

I know its 5 days later since the initial upload so this probably won't get noticed but a fun fact about Opal is that it breaks down if it is not maintained with a certain level of salt contact (which is why people encourage people to rub their opal from the salt that is on their hands) this is also symbolic of our fusion Opal as she needs a certain amount of cooperation from Amethyst and Pearl in order to maintain herself

It’s a damn shame that during the series Pearl and Amethyst didn’t get along as well and had a hard time cooperating without Garnet. Makes you think how many times we could’ve seen Opal throughout the show. Like when they fused like nothing in front of the diamonds. Their relationship grew so much as the series ended. I’m glad we got to see her again in the movie. And in future but she shape shifted.

The hindu divinity she is ressemibling of would be Parvati, the charitative form of the consort of Siva, rather than Kali, the terrifying aspect of her. Shinato also makes sense, since it is based on Shinatobe, a heavenly deity (like, the place we see Opal first is in "Heaven Mountain") from Japan, and is summoned by ritual in the game. Another inspirational divinity would be Artemis, the greek goddess of the moon and hunt (since Opal has its white pallor, and she is also armed with a bow and arrows). Excellent video, she's ever been one of my top faves from the show <3

I like how since Pearl and Amethyst need to be at "Peace" with each other to be Opal it causes Opal to be one of the most calmest fusion we know
since even a little bit being out of touch would just unfuse her

I love opal gemstones and I was always told growing up that unless it was your birthstone(or a 14th anniversary gift) you couldn't wear one as it would invite death into the family (so I'm glad my birthday is I October 😁)
