still rememnber when this came out. dark tanquillity and in flames were already stars in the making back in ´98 but amon amarth was fresh blood on melodeath scene, they were different and found their own style

wow never heard their debut before and I am stunned! what a beautiful raw melodic death metal with black metal influences. And those stories... Pity they do not make such music anymore...

The first song set the tone for all other songs to follow and established Amon Amarth as the greatest band. I grew up in the 70s and this was the sound I was longing for. Thank you! 🤘

So raw, full of energy and testosterone. First 4 Amon Amarth albums are the best period of any band I've heard in my life. Fate of Norns is the turning point.

All albums up to Twilight of the Thunder God were all-killer, no-filler Melodic Death Metal. In my opinion everything after was repetitions of themes and sounds that worked, and what was more broadly popular in the metal fanbase.

But these formative albums were sonic Ragnarok; a valkyrie charge of driving force and a berserkers war cry of vocals. This debut is one of the strongest debuts in the genre, and for me hasn't been matched since.

Their best album for me personally. There's something very special about the mix of death metal, melody, and 'epicness' that their other albums don't quite have in the same way. There's so much energy in the riffs and drumming which blend really well with the higher pitched screaming on this album.
Love the raw production too, really adds to the screaming viking going into battle imagery. Killer guitar tones for the riffs too. All of the songs are bangers too, none of them feel weaker than others.

I like a great number of songs from this band, on all their albums.

Great storytelling on this one. As said in earlier comments.. their first, their best.

Their vocals are definitely the best on this album. Incredible release.

Every Amon Amarth album since has been them trying to outdo their initial effort. They've come close a couple times, but their first is still their best.
