More expensive but able to go into rooms without a roof are fibre optic systems. They employ a rooftop dish to chanel multiple fibers to basements and inner offices. An advantage is feeling the clouds go by, keeping us connected with nature and circadian rhythms.

There are these things called windows that work fine as well

I knew about this years years ago. Even the tubes with shiny insides . I cannot believe people are just now realizing this old technology....

"The Americans" right. People have been doing this for centuries.

This technique was used thousands of years ago in Idan to keep the inside of the house bright and even by creating towers on the roof for air conditioning. I saw my mother's grandfather's house, which is more than two hundred years old and was built in a large garden of 5 hectares, which had such creativity. I must say that that house and garden are in the south of Iran, 90 kilometers from the Persian Gulf, where people do not allow anyone to destroy the old fabric of the city. People bought several old houses that were three hundred years old or more by collecting money and turned them into tourist attractions.

I've been waiting for this invention for a long time. I hope this one reflects the sun's Vitamin D as well.

Thank you for sharing that memory — it actually paints a beautiful, nostalgic picture of simple but smart solutions people used before modern lighting and ceilings. What you’re describing is a traditional daylighting method — like a skylight system but made in a clever, affordable way.

They’d cut a hole in the roof, place a piece of frosted or blurry glass to let sunlight in while diffusing it softly so the room wouldn’t be too harshly lit, and then seal it carefully (maybe with mud, tar, or plastic sheeting — what you called a Peking) to prevent rainwater from leaking inside. It’s practical, resourceful, and quite eco-friendly for its time.

And you’re right — nowadays we have fancy, upgraded versions of this: modern skylights, solar tubes, even smart lighting systems, but those old methods carry a special warmth and memory of how families made homes comfortable with whatever they had.

Do you remember how it felt when sunlight streamed through those blurry glass panels into your room?

During the night. We shut the light off . So we can sleep 😴.

I have these in all out bathrooms and kitchen haven’t used the light ever during a sunny day. These things are great and very easy to install. They are very bright, don’t knock it until you try it. I continue to install these in all of our rentals we remodel. I get them from Homedepot or Lowe’s. Also solar exhaust fans are great way to exhaust an attic.

Not Americans. The concept was notably advanced by the Australian company Solatube International, which introduced a commercially viable product in the late 1980s.
They refined the technology using highly reflective tubing and optical domes to efficiently capture and transport natural light into indoor spaces.

It’s really just a tubular skylight. The part on the outside is called a collector dome. Its job is to refract and reflect light down. Some of the fancy ones are sometimes called optical domes or something similar. They instead may contain things like prismatic concentric rings to more efficiently redirect sunlight down the intended path.

Also a clear bottle filled with water will do a similar thing but less efficiently.

😂😂 this was first time invested in Africa

These are just high tech version of skylight which American prefer and would use if they 1. Didn’t leak often and 2. Weren’t really expensive to install and maintain. Really it’s better to just have more windows than add sky lights. :)

If you use solar panels on the roof, you can also use them to power your fridges, all supplied by a thin power cable ;-)

Similar systems are being used in many ancient temples since hundreds of years.

When we remodeled our house we had to have more natural light already have huge windows as it is and we needed more natural light instead of the 9 foot sliding glass door so we have solar tubes that was over 15 years ago and let me tell you they are been the greatest thing

These things will eventuality cause water leaks. Do not make unnecessary penetrations on the roof.
