In the 1870s, a newsarticle reported about a region in Europe where people eat arsenic. They were said to be beautiful and healthy, which lead to a massive fad for eating arsenic in England.

When London newspapers broke a story about the "Arsenic Eaters" of Europe, people went crazy for eating arsenic. Apparently, there really was a group who did that, but they ate small bits of metallic arsenic, which was far less potent than the powder version that was common in England. The Victorians became obsessed with arsenic, and it was introduced into beauty products and health pills.
