June 24, 1982 - On a clear summer night, during a seemingly calm trip to Australia, the impossible happens to British Airways Flight 009. Smoke starts filling the cabin. The engines catch fire – then stop working. The flight crew witness a bizarre shower of brilliant sparks strike the windshield of the aircraft. The entire plane is surrounded by a shimmering white glow.

Without power, the plane begins falling from the sky. Passengers are terrified. The crew have no idea why their engines have quit – or how to get them working again. As they fall through the night the captain faces a difficult choice – return to the nearest airport and likely crash into the mountains, or attempt an incredibly difficult ocean landing.

Just minutes before crashing into the sea, the stricken plane’s engines roar back to life. The jet limps back to Halim airport in Jakarta. But the crew realises that their windshield is severely damaged -- making it nearly impossible to see their runway. After suffering through a night of bizarre twists and turns, they manage to touch down safely at Halim. But they are still bewildered – what had knocked their plane from the sky? What investigators discover changed the way pilots are trained and altered the understanding of how volcanoes can affect aviation.

EVERY shot of the 747 with the st elmo's fire and engine flaming out is just....awesome. terrifying, but awesome. It's like a ghost pirate ship. the flying dutchman.

When you survive an ordeal as traumatic as this you appreciate EVERYTHING in life more. I lived it. People think you're crazy for it, but every day is a gift.

I love how the pilots were all worried that they'd somehow personally caused the issues with the flight, as if they'd forgotten to take some switch out of the "haunted" position.

This is the most British incident ever "I trust you are not in distress."

I remember first watching this episode in a hotel room as a teen, and being absolutely astounded. I’d been hoping to find it again!

Pilots are ALWAYS unsung heroes. Courage under (St Elmos) fire. They fight for not only thier lives but for the lives of the crew & cabin guests. A big thank u!

The effects on this episode specifically astounds me to this day, some of the most beautiful flickers and flames in the entire series

I like episodes like this because they hold that air of tension, mystery, worry, yet everyone remains safe in the end.

Also this was the ruggedness of the Queen of the Skies.

That conversation was almost comedic between ATC Jakarta and British Airways 009.

That crew was amazing. The way they kept their composure despite never having encountered this situation before, the way they worked together, and that pilot landing the plane w/ almost no visibility (night, "foggy" windshield, & the system on the landing system on the ground at the airport not working! It seems like everything went wrong & they still landed the plane safely! They even immediately starting looking over logs together to see if THEY had done something or missed something that could have been a warning. So they took responsibility even when they didn't do anything wrong & tried to learn from mistakes (even though they didn't make any mistakes). Wow. I want a crew like that flying any airplanes I board!

I've seen quite a few air disaster shows on TV over the last several years, but this is the best one I've ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end. I had anxiety watching it, and prayed these people would live; I was even starting to cry. I LOVE that there was a happy ending and love that these people have always kept in touch. What an amazing and terrifying story. Thank God for those wonderful pilots who brought everyone to safety!

watching these makes me so grateful to be alive. Especially this one. Don't take your life for granted! Glad all these people made it home to their families.

The male flight attendant: "No worries, just a bit of friction". lol!!!. Turns out that's exactly what it was.

This is the most british response to a plane bursting into flames ever.
"Are you ladies alright?"
"Oh yes we're fine."🤣

I have to admit this is the only Mayday episode that had me completely stumped until the end.

I feel like people should make a movie out of this like the Sully movie...
