And when there is more oxygen in the air, this passive breathing can sustain a bigger body, that's why insects used to be a lot bigger

This is a Pokémon and you cannot convince me otherwise

it’s less of a breathing thing and more of an absorbing thing? they don’t have lungs because of their exoskeletons. they just sort of absorb oxygen through the holes in their sides. that’s why bugs only get so big. because at a certain point they can’t absorb oxygen far enough into their bodies

You can actually suffocate bugs by dousing them in soapy water

Interestingly, they don't really even "breathe"
Instead of actively pushing air in and out of their spiracles, passive diffusion allows the CO2 and Oxygen inside and outside of their bodies to kind of mix. This is a big factor in limiting the maximum size insects can grow too. NEAT!

I am thoroughly convinced that insects like these are where the tales of fairies came from.

Somewhere out there in an alternate timeline, an insect is studying the weird nose thingies that allow mammals to breathe.

So wat I'm hearing is that's the weak spot we should go after if bugs were huge again

I’m eating skittles while watching this and I want to cry. I despise crickets and grasshoppers.

This is also why bugs could become so big back then

Yep, I've red that in my science book

That's why insects and other terrestrial invertebrates don't get very big these days. There's not enough oxygen in the air to support the massive sizes they reached during ancient times, and the spiracles are not very efficient as a means of breathing.

This reminds me of tiny elves, sprites, tiny people, etc....

More oxygen means bigger insects over time

So that's how insects drowned quickly

I wonder when that cricket came out to his parents
