I'd support this tax if it applied to all vehicles equally regardless of fuel and the money was used to provide better alternatives to driving (bike lanes, more frequent public transport, etc)

I don't mind it, it's a progressive tax that is charged on consumption. I think switching to EVs isn't the golden bullet, we should be looking at reducing our energy consumption and making it renewable more. If you care about the environment we should be looking to have walkable neighbourhoods and more connected public transport.

Having a tax on all roads seems like a good thing to me

If we can find any positives out of this whatsoever, Tesla is immediately taking the 3, 000 rebate from the date of order not the date of delivery so as long as you order before the end of the month you will get your rebate and BYD are allocating more vechiles to Victoria to try and maximise as many sales as possible before 30th June.

Chris - I wish you all the best in the case. I would have thought the biggest flaw in Vic Gov's argument would have been that EVs don't pay fuel excise which was their stated reason for introducing the tax (otherwise how do they justify taxing only EVs and not ICE vehicles?j. While true, fuel excise is a federal tax not a state tax. EV drivers currently pay more to the Federal Govt upfront in GST on the increased pirchase price of the cars - traditional between $15 - 30K more than the petrol equivalent. Good luck because they are throwing a lot of resources at it.

In China they raised the cost to register an internal combustion car to thousands of dollars, and made EV's extremely affordable.
Compare the strategies! Our governments are rife with greenwashing, it's absolutely despicable.

Chris, just had to pay my "Road Tax", which increased on July to 2.8c/km. Never seen any mention of this anywhere. Hurry up High Court.

I happily drive an EV in Victoria. I would be okay with paying this tax if 100% of the funds went into public transport funding. EVs are great but we need to reduce car focused living.

Victoria has just announced that it has the highest EV sales above all other states in Australia. We should be the lowest due to the EV tax, and send a message out, don’t buy an electric car in Victoria.
