There could be and we would have no way of knowing. We're taught that we have a sphere of influence that extends out at the speed of light from the invention of radio, but our radio signals wouldn't be detectable at the nearest star, Proxima Centauri at 4.3 light years, let alone 120 light years. Voyager has only recently made it to the edge of the sun's influence, and we need to be able to detect signals on the order of quadrillionths of a watt just to detect it, and it's pointed directly at us.

The cosmos could be teeming with life, and we would be just as clueless of it as ancient humans were clueless of viruses and other microbes
