GOP Doubles Down On Racist Rhetoric Going Into The Midterms

With the midterm elections just weeks away, Republicans are doubling down on racist rhetoric to appeal to voters in the form of invoking the great replacement theory, darkening the skin color of their opponents in attack ads and accusing black people of being criminals. MSNBC Ayman’s Mohyeldin spoke with Steve Phillips, author of the new book, ‘How to Win the Civil War’, on this disturbing trend and what Democrats need to do to fight against it.

My mother tried to tell me that removing confederate monuments was removing history, so I asked her how she would feel if she had to pass a statue of Dr Mengele every time she went to buy groceries or to the post office? She conveniently forgets that her mother was an immigrant who was nearly placed in a camp, except that she had blue eyes and her mother's German surname. Her father, a Hungarian Roma, was in the camps and died not long after the camp was liberated.

Ever since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act in '64, southerners have been voting against their economic interests and voting for their racism by voting for the GQP. Good news is that with the GQP's old white base dying out, the electorate is becoming younger, better educated, more racially and ethically diverse and more concerned with solving long term problems like climate change, health care and preserving the social safety net for generations to come. This newer electorate will move the country further to the progressive left for the good of all.

It used to be that Republicans and Democrats just had differing viewpoints on the importance of spending on national security versus social programs versus a wide variety of things. National politics now appears to be more focused on just the difference between good and evil.

I've lived it! This man is right! The South never conceded defeat and continue to fight the Civil War. And the descendants of this ideology, along with many other supporters, work on the structures to destroy any gains in this country toward equality. I was shocked, living briefly in Norfolk, VA. when a white man told me I wouldn't do well there" because I look white people in the eyes"! This was in the 70s. This attitude still exists as a friend born and raised in Mississippi attests to. Today!!
