How to Crochet an Incredible Cardigan Using the Mosaic Crochet Technique

This crochet cardigan pattern has written instructions, a video tutorial, and a mosaic crochet chart.

**edit to video: start with chaining 86**

The Wish Up A Star Crochet Cardigan has a unique simple construction making it a beginner-friendly crochet garment. The cardigan body and arms are crocheted flat in one piece with half double crochet stitches, then seamed under the arms and down the sides. After seaming the top of the cardigan, the Mosaic crochet colorwork and ribbing is added to the bottom of the body.

Its intricate yet straightforward pattern is also a great way to hone your crochet skills. Plus, you can personalize the design to make it your own. Whether you choose a subtle dual-color crochet pattern or a vibrant multi-hued version, you’re sure to feel fashionable and cozy all at once!

The mosaic crochet colorwork is really what makes this garment shine. It’s a gratifying repeat that adds eye-catching repeats and style.

Ok it took me a week and half to make. It is the first cardigan I have ever made. It’s beautiful. I didn’t use a yarn that was drapey but it still fits like a medium should. I will make it again.

I did a gauge swatch and I even blocked it and it matched the pattern perfectly. Now I I have the first section done for the back and the first row for the sleeves in the 1X size and when I measure what I have done so far, my cardigan is going to end up being 2 sizes bigger than the size I'm making. I've counted my stitches correctly so I'm not sure how it could be so far off. I guess I'll frog it before I get too far along. So frustrating

I've been working on this for a couple weeks now. I've started and restarted more times than I care to count. First for sizing differences. I ended up making the back, sleeves and front sections the sizes I needed based on my body measurements adding in inches for ease and making stitch counts that will work with the repeat of the mosaic pattern. I added a few rows for a longer cardigan before starting the mosaic section.
When I got to the mosaic section, I got a few rows in and just couldn't wrap my head around it and it looked terrible. I think because I was using a light and dark yarn but they were opposite of the light and dark on the chart which confused my brain. I frogged and started over. I printed the chart and marked the boxes with c for chain and s for single crochet which helped a lot but when I got about half way through the pattern realized I was losing stitches somewhere and ended up frogging again. Restarted and realized that I wasn't losing as many stitches as I thought but I needed to use a larger hook than called for because the chain stitches were just ending up being a tighter tension than the rest and pulling the work in too much so now I'm on version 3 or 4 or maybe even 5 and it's looking very nice and the right size and the pattern is looking right.
I think my cardigan will be beautiful and something I'll wear for years and years now that I have the issues figured out.

I have at least intermediate crochet skills (have crocheted for 40+ years) and have used many patterns and made many garments for myself and others in many different yarns and hook sizes etc. This is my first mosaic project however. I'd say this pattern, while the basic shape is very beginner friendly, I have found many patterns easier to follow. I don't believe this one is properly graded to fit different sizes. I do understand that it is to be oversized but even with that in mind, it is wildly and oddly the wrong size for the size I was trying to make (much to narrow in the upper sleeve, way way to wide in the shoulder and many inches too long in the sleeves).

I'm not giving this information to throw shade but to let anyone making this sweater aware to take measurements of yourself and the garment along the way. Or take measurements of one of your favorite fitting sweaters for comparison. Do the practice swatch of the mosaic pattern before hand and get really familiar with how the mosaic stitches work if you're not familiar with them.

I just made this cardigan and it turned out very well, with no issues. I made the Desert Cactus throw earlier this year and had watched the tutorials for that so I had a good understanding of your mosaic technique. It's a beautiful design and I am very happy with my cardigan.

I bought the pattern off Etsy and have it in front of me while watching the YouTube video. The hook sizes and the number of starting chains for a small on the video are different than what the pattern is showing. Could you confirm which is correct and, if the video is, does that affect the mosaic chart. Thank you.

This is a beautiful cardigan. But I’m having an extremely hard time reading the pattern and the chart. The pattern is missing lines. I have looked at the chart and I’m totally confused. I cannot figure out what I’m supposed to do for the missing rows. I just finished row 7. I would really like to finish this cardigan. I’ve bought an Ebook from you that is all mosaic crochet as well.
P.S. I’m not new to crochet. Should I just single crochet row 8 in color B?

This is so beautiful! 🙂 By chance, will you be designing a knit version? I would love the challenge of making both in crochet and knit. 🙂

Where can I see you doing the mosaic? I’m having trouble understanding.

How much yarn for first half of the cardigan without mosaic?

I’m a bit confused. If the totals are 208 stitches then 98 each side plus 16 stitches in the middle the total stitches will be 212 stitches not 208
