Running Power WILL Revolutionize Your Low Heart Rate Training // Maffetone Training Tips

Running Power is a relatively new term in the world of sports technology, but that doesn't mean it's not useful! Today I want to explain to you how I think using the combination of running power and the Maffetone method is the best way to build your aerobic base and start running faster! I personally use the stryd power meter to measure running power but companies are finally starting to develop more ways to measure running power, Coros just came out with their new GPS running watch (Coros Pace 2) that has stryd running power included for only $199!

Really appreciate you taking the time to watch, I hope you learn something from the video! Happy running :)

Great video Brendon. A must-watch for all runners, even if you are not into Maffetone or power training. Good explanation.

in a couple of day going to get my first smartwatch with a running power metric (specifically polar pacer pro). what you have explained two years ago was exactly what i was looking for.

if you have any more updates or insights since then i would love to hear it sir, ty.

Hey Brendon you've got some of the most creative running videos I've seen on YouTube. Pretty cool stuff.

I actually was thinking about this very topic on my easy run yesterday. I am no where near being a pure Maffetone purist, but often on easy days I try to stick to my Maff HR to avoid going too fast. That said, I was a high school and college cross-country runner, and personally I just ignore trying to hit my Maff HR on hills and just try to keep at the same tempo. It feels wrong to slow down going up a hill, because it feels like you are training your body to do something I would never do in a race.

Maybe that’s just me.

Hey folks! Really appreciate you tuning in today, I hope you're having a fantastic weekend. Have you tried running with power?? Or do you think it's more of a gimmick?

I practice trail running and I tried to apply the MAF method, keeping my HR constant to 130, during the whole training. I noticed a really strange thing, a decoupling between HR and Power. I mean, when I run in quite flat terrain it is quite easy to manage the method's approach. When I have to face steep stuff, even if I feel my muscles burning in a way that I can keep this effort not for a long time, my HR collapses to 100/105. Finally, If I get the top of the hill in the previous conditions and my legs are really at the edge, when I approach the downhill even with a minimum effort, HR blows up to 150. How is explained that?

How are you able to view hr and power at the same time while running?

Stryd app has power, other rubbing apps integrate hr. Wasn’t sure how to view both during training. I can review both after the run, but would prefer real-time monitoring of both.

What weekly volume would you run a week?

Great video - I've got a quick question though.
For MAF HR training. There always is a cardiac drift which means your HR would creep up even if you maintain the same speed (or running power in your context), so you'd always run at slower pace toward the end of each run than the beginning. If you get your running power by averaging them after the initial 2 weeks of MAF runs, then you will have only one power number. How does your HR look when you keep your entire run capped at your calculated power? Running faster in the beginning and slower at the end as in a typical MAF run will still be simulated? Or your HR is lower in the beginning (because you are less tired) and then end up your run with HR above MAF max HR? I'm just curious how HR would react by the fixed running power number and if it's not "violating" MAF training.

This is the exact same idea I had, to find the corresponding power from the MAF heart rate. However I can't find if Maffetone himself officially approves of this. Do you know if he ever mentioned it?

Congrats on the successful MAF training. After a year's training, does the MAF method keep improving your timings? Or does it plateau?
