Our Yamabushi (Mountain Ascetic) Rituals at the Mountaintop

This is a short run through of the ritual we use during yamabushi training with Master Hoshino.

Note that this is a fusion of Shinto and Buddhism. When we do training through Dewa Sanzan Jinja the prayers are different still, and Master Hoshino's training is likely the only place in Japan to do the prayers in this way due to the history of the place (see my video on religion in Japan).

Usually first there is Sango to purify ourselves before the Kami.

Then there is an individual prayer by the Sendatsu (Master).

Then we pray The Heart Sutra, and sometimes some mantras for the Gongen (Avatars) and Buddhist gods such as Fudomyo'o, Kan'onsama (Mt. Haguro), Amida Nyorai (Mt. Gassan), and Dainichi Nyorai (Mt. Yudono).

The Heart Sutra is all the realisations Buddha had at enlightenment. Essentially form is nothingness, nothingness is form.

Then we pray the Sanzan Haishi for each of the Kami there. I wasn't 100% sure of the name of the Kami of Mt. Yamuki, so I just went with Yamuki no Kami.

Lastly, there is a prayer for the safe journey of everyone involved in the training, a safe journey for the souls of the deceased lost to natural disasters, and other things such as world peace.

Then of course we also have our Horagai conch :)
