The Soundeck turntable mat uses constrained layer damping to remove vibration, stopping air has nothing at all to do with it. Here's a video showing a standard piece of steel and an SDS piece both freely suspended. The vibration absorbing characteristics are clearly shown as they are struck.

Purely because the air cant get underneath as it covers the holes left in the turntable platter.
