After a decade of farming, it turns out I have a few original songs on the topic. I wrote this one while working on farmland along the beautiful, cold Nooksack River in Washington.

Take me to the River and show me all your bees
I know they live in boxes under the cottonwood trees
I've seen them in the rows of lettuce when it goes to seed
I know they live out there under shade of cottonwood leaves

Take me to the river and show me how it runs
I know the fields out here are good because they flood
From the river so damn cold it turns my August limbs to stone
When I wade in the water before I turn home

Show me your cracked hands
I know they've turned leather in the sun
I know that every seed they've sown
Was sown with love

Show me your cracked face
I know the lines were drawn with worry
I know the lines were etched with laughter too

So take me to the river and show me all your bees
I know they live in boxes under the cottonwood trees
By that river so damn cold it turns my august limbs to stone
When I wade in the water before I turn home
