"His books were burned twice. How many authors can say that?" Great line dude.

Hey, I appreciate that you bring us some really underestimated literature, but sometimes you come up with really obscure, "never heard of that" stuff, and again that's great, but you know, maybe you should add a two-to-three-word summary of the book on the thumbnail (like you've done before - delillo's underworld, blood meridian etc) to grab our attention and make it an additional stimulation to watch the video and perhaps read the book 😉

You can also check figure of polish author - Stanislaw Przybyszewski. He was a publisher and translator of Ewers in Poland and really important person of german and european decadent period (he wrote both in polish and german).

First time I read Hanns Heinz Ewers " Vampir", I was imagining Klaus Kinski"s insane grins and rants all the way until the end of the book. As a huge fan of these both crazy over the top artists, I thought it was just my mania playing tricks on me. First time hearing someone say " Frank Braun should be played by Kinski" !!! I feel less alone and less crazy tonite !!

Was curious what you thought about the story arc of ‘Alraune’ as a parallel to the Arthur Machen novela ‘The Great God Pan’ ?
Both have amoral succubi as their main protagonists. Machen also knew Crowley and definitively influenced Lovecraft as well:

Cliff, look up Blaise Cendrars. He was an extraordinary character and writer. His book 'Moravagine' has been published by NYRB.

I visited the grave of Hanns Heinz Evers last year for the first time last year. He was burried in Dusseldorf - actually near from my home.

Actually we can say that he was "cancelled" three times coz because of his "nazi"past, he never became a cult author like Arthur Machen or Lovecraft. And there are very few translations as mentioned in the video. If you are interested in the "pancho villa" adventure, it is fully described in the third book of the "Frank Braun" trilogy ("The sorcerer's aprentice", "Alraune", and Vampir). I didn't know that this story was real until I found this awesome video. To be more precise about his relationship with Crowley, they DID work in the USA during first world war as propagandists against America taking part in WW1. For the same company. This has not been proven yet-unless I am mistaken- that they actually met each other. But one thing is certain, they share some personality elements, undoubtedly. Using "shock value" as a tool, bisexuality, and a morbid and creative fascination for the Jungian archetype of the " Femme Fatale" which Ewers refers to as the "Alraune" and Crowley as the "Scarlet Woman".

I haven’t seen any movie reviews yet. I love your book reviews and I think we have similar tastes. I say this to suggest a movie called The Night Of The Hunter. it’s the only movie done by this director. truly a gem. I would also recommend something from lars van trier or darren aronofsky, but you would’ve probably seen something from those directors.

The reason why I think you’d like it is because the film captures that delicate dance of beauty and terror. I thought I was going to hate it before I watched it, but the movie does such a good job of stirring the philosophical gears in ones mind.

cheers

The book has 5 screen versions. I managed to find only three. Two with Brigitta Helm and one with Hildegard Knef. What about other two?

Great review. Unrelated, but I suggest a review of 'Naked Lunch' by William Burroughs. Would be funny!

I need this book. I love horror especially lovecraftian horror and gothic horror but if those two were mixed then you got my attention.
