How Iraqi Lions Confronted Rambo Flight - First Northern Air Battle in Desert Storm

Northern front in Operation Desert Storm opened a bit late. First, the Turkish government didn't allow the use of its airbases for attacks against Iraq and first combat sorties from Incirlik were only launched on the second day of the war. But only the night ones, day sorties were cancelled due to bad weather. Finally, on 19 January 1991, the 7440th Composite Wing (Provisional) of the USAFE sent their F-16s to attack the Kirkuk airfield complex. They were escorted by F-15C from 525th TFS from Bitburg, Germany. Since many Iraqi airbases were still operational, the Coalition sortie wouldn't go unchallenged. Iraqi fighter pilots took off to attack the Coalition airplanes.

Love these historical recreations. Politics aside, you have to give the Iraqi pilots credit for bravery. Hopelessly outnumbered, massively outclassed technologically... and they still went up.

At 07:13 I notice there's like some space on the wingtips where the Sidewinders normally are fitted seems to be a bug from the guys how made the F-1 for DCS

I guess the Iraqi lions were carrying Super 530Fs under the wings. Certainly at 15 miles the 530F could not get high chances of kill but at least Iraqis were still able to launch from this range since it was a head on engagement. Interestingly they didn't.

Čitao sam juče u jednom pokušaju mitova 25 da presretnu dva f15. Zvanično jedan f15 je oštećen, a prema irački tvrdnjama drugi je oboren i pao je u Saudijsku Arabiju. Po meni ovo je zaista moguć scenario, dva mig 25 imali r40 rakete dometa od 50 do 80 km i po meni mogu parirati aim 7 po dometu. Inače odličan video

What is it went wrong with the Iraqi aircraft: how was it they could not launch any missile? I just do not understand modern air combat and what determines success or failure: can you briefly explain?

ive read that a reason iraqi pilots didnt shoot as readily as they may have been expected to, was due to strict ground control dictating their actions.
